Jochen Lagemann, Senior Vice President and Managing Director Europe and Asia PrimaLoft, reveals the details of PrimaLoft® P.U.R.E.™, a new manufacturing technique that reduces carbon emissions by 48 percent
What is PrimaLoft® P.U.R.E.™ and what does is stand for?
PrimaLoft® P.U.R.E.™ is a new standard in manufacturing technology that allows the use of air, instead of heat from an oven, to produce our insulation. The result is a reduction of carbon emissions by as much as 48 percent. P.U.R.E. stands for ‘Produced Using Reduced Emissions’.
How long have you been working on the concept and why was it important to you?
PrimaLoft® P.U.R.E.™ is another huge step for us in our mission to be Relentlessly Responsible™, which is, and has been, our intrinsic motivation for many years. As a world leader in research and innovative development of comfort solutions, we strive to develop the highest performing products which lessen environmental impact. For us as a brand it’s crucially important to work on sustainable solutions, not only for products, but throughout the entire supply chain. We completed a comprehensive environmental assessment of the manufacturing and determined that removing the need for thermal ovens was an opportunity to drastically reduce carbon emissions. This is when we started to research, test and have now finally achieved this technology breakthrough, after four years of development.
This new manufacturing technology reduces carbon emissions by up to 48 percent. Can you talk us through how it works and how it is different compared to traditional manufacturing methods?
In our current production process, we use so-called ‘binder fibres’ which get cooked in hot ovens to bond and stabilise the fibres. The end of the process results in millions of air pockets, which keep the body warm via the resulting insulation. With PrimaLoft® P.U.R.E.™ technology we were able to develop a manufacturing technique to disrupt traditional manufacturing by removing the need to use heat, via on oven, to bond the fibres. Due to a special process the fibres self-bond and self-cure through exposure to air alone, with no need for ovens.
What are the other environmental benefits to PrimaLoft® P.U.R.E.™?
As well as turning off the ovens, we also created this initial product, PrimaLoft® Gold Insulation, using 100 percent post-consumer recycled content (plastic bottles), without any compromise on performance.
Will P.U.R.E.™ manufacturing replace the production methods of all your current insulation?
As with our recycled materials and PrimaLoft® Bio™ technology, we aim to incorporate PrimaLoft® P.U.R.E.™ step-by-step in our product range. This will be an ongoing development. For the launch we will start to use it in our PrimaLoft® Gold Insulation as a special version, which also uses 100 percent recycled material as a base. We have a global partner – Patagonia – who will be the first to use P.U.R.E.™ technology for AW20/21 season. More to come on our plans with Patagonia in the coming months.
Which garments can be created using this new manufacturing technology?
Any products which presently use our insulation, from jackets and pants to sleeping bags and accessories.
Do you have any future plans in terms of sustainability and reducing your environmental footprint?
We recently announced our strategic partnership with Parley for the Oceans – this will take plastic intercepted from remote islands, beaches and coastal communities and use it to manufacture high-performance insulation products. There are a lot more challenges we are working on to reduce our overall ecological footprint and help push the industry forward. We will continue to set ourselves ambitious goals to provide holistic solutions that combat environmental issues from all angles. Sustainability for us is not a trend, but the PrimaLoft team is on an ongoing relentlessly responsible mission.
