It has been four weeks since the outdoor industry rose to the inaugural Hike Bike Paddle challenge on Monday 1 October. This multi disciplinary test of endurance provided the perfect opportunity for the outdoor industry to get away from behind their office desks and live and breathe their brands. They also raised over £14,000 to help vulnerable young people benefit from a three-year outdoor adventure programme provided by the Youth Adventure Trust.
Whatever the weather in Snowdonia, it can be guaranteed that the expanse of mountain ranges, rivers and rocky outcrops will provide a spectacular backdrop. Although teams could share the disciplines amongst their members, all teams took on the full 70km – hiking 18km, biking 50km and paddling the last 2km through every type of weather.
Through the glorious sun at the top of Snowdon, lashing wind and unyielding rain in the afternoon, team mates and competitors got to know each other in a totally different environment and under out of the ordinary circumstances.
The Ellis Brigham senior management team were crowned ‘kings of the mountain’ with a total time of 9hrs 47 minutes, completing the hike from the bottom to the top of Snowdon in the fastest time. ‘Pimp my Stride’ from Codestone smashed the bike section while sports marketing agency, Brandwave, ruled the waves on the paddle section and were the champion fundraisers.
Dan Macaulay, Chief Executive of Brandwave, said of the challenge: “HBP was a truly life changing experience for me. Suffice to say the challenge was indeed challenging but I loved every second of it!! The venue, networking, and organisation was second to none. There are very few events that bring the key players in the sports industry together like this. We’re looking forward to HBP 2020 already.”
All funds raised through Hike Bike Paddle will help vulnerable young people get outside to build resilience and develop the hope, confidence and skills to face the challenges in their daily lives through the three-year Youth Adventure Programme.
Registration for the 2020 event is now open and places are expected to book up fast. Priority will be given to teams which took part in 2019. Contact Philippa Cox on email@example.com to express your interest in taking part.
