The It’s Great Out There Coalition has now closed the window for founding members to join the coalition. A final total of 23 companies signed up for founding member status, including brands, retailers, technology brands and trade shows. Many of the biggest outdoor businesses from across Europe have committed themselves to the coalition, which is based in Brussels, close to the heart of European policy making.
Following an initial commitment by eleven companies and one national association by ISPO, a further twelve firms have since joined the It’s Great Out There Coalition as founding members: Berghaus, Columbia, Intersport, Nordisk, OutDoor, Primaloft, Regatta, Reima, Salomon, Sport2000, Vango and Vaude. In addition, the coalition is inviting other national associations to be members and two have joined so far: UK-based Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) and Bundesverband der Deutschen Sportartikel-Industrie e.V. (BSI) in Germany. The coalition has also started recruiting standard full members and AKU, Deuter, Lowe Alpine and Rab have already signed up.
It’s Great Out There Coalition secretary general Andrew Denton comments: “It’s Great Out There is really gathering momentum. We are delighted with the number of founding members that we have recruited, which comfortably exceeds our initial expectations and gives us an excellent platform on which to build a far reaching and sustained campaign. What is even more exciting is the range of founding members that the coalition has, in terms of type of organisation and geographical spread. Along with national associations and the latest full members, they have recognised how important this project is and what we can achieve by working together.
“The combined audience that our membership can reach is huge and we are now building a compelling and dynamic programme of activity that we will roll out from this summer onwards. Of course, this is just the start – our team will continue to recruit members and work with them to promote the great benefits of outdoor participation to the many millions of people across Europe who we now have the capacity to reach with It’s Great Out There messages.”
The It’s Great Out There website (www.itsgreatoutthere.com) will be a central resource for both the public and the trade as the campaign develops. The site has been significantly updated in recent months and showcases a wealth of content, which is constantly being enhanced thanks to the input of members. Coalition members and the central campaign team will also be using social media to share #itsgreatoutthere messages and news of events and initiatives, to millions of followers.
As well as promoting outdoor participation and lobbying European policymakers to invest more funds into projects that support It’s Great Out There aims, one of the key objectives of the coalition will be to actively support events. The coalition will back initiatives that aim to introduce new participants to outdoor activities. A process for deciding the allocation of funding support for events will be revealed after the coalition’s first General Assembly, which will be held immediately before OutDoor.
